Decks
We haven't found a reliable published national per-square-metre figure for deck sanding and oiling. Deck quotes vary with the deck's condition, repairs, balustrades and the coating. Ask for a quote that lists each of these. See deck restoration.
What changes the price
- Area and layout. Small jobs cost more per square metre because setup time is similar.
- Condition. Floors from under carpet, with staples, glue or cupped boards, take longer.
- Paint. Painted boards in older homes may need lead-safe handling.
- Coating. The product and number of coats make a real difference.
- Repairs. Replacement boards, infills and gap filling add labour and materials.
- Furniture and access. Moving furniture is often charged separately.
- Travel. Towns further from central Bendigo may attract a travel charge.
Comparing quotes
Make sure each quote shows:
- the area being sanded and the rate;
- the coating product by name and the number of coats;
- repairs, nail punching and gap filling, itemised;
- stairs, edges and any areas left out;
- furniture moving, if included;
- the expected number of days and drying times.
Two quotes that both say "sand and polish" can describe quite different jobs.
